MILITARY IMAGES

Guidelines for Contributors

Published since 1979, MI is a unique magazine devoted to the study of the American soldier and sailor of the years 1839-1900 as seen in period photos. At least three quarters of the articles published in it deal with the Civil War era. Major subject categories include:

1. Analyses of period photos as to unique content, subject, background, etc.

2. Analyses of uniforms, equipment, and insignia as seen in photos.

3. Biographies emphasizing the common soldier (enlisted men and junior officers), usually published as short vignettes of one or two pages with photo(s) of the subject at the time of service. Generally we do not cover postwar veterans’ organizations and related photos.

4. Unit histories: company, regimental, and brigade level. Combat narratives should emphasize tactics, action, and human interest details. Relevant photos are a must. Sidebars cover weapons, TO&E, casualty statistics, etc. We do NOT publish broad-brush accounts of generals and campaigns, nor do we cover modern reenactments.

5. Photo-surveys of image collections, usually, but not necessarily, on a theme such as cavalry, navy, zouaves, blacks, weapons, humor, etc.

6. Letters and diaries if accompanied by photo(s) of the writer in uniform.

7. Technical articles on 19th Century photography: techniques, preservation, restoration, acquisition, etc.

PAYMENT is an honorarium consisting of three copies of the issue and a six months subscription for a full article and a three months subscription for a single-page piece, such as a personality profile. Most articles are written by photo collectors for photo collectors; unless you are already engrossed in our very narrow niche, you will not find it easy to be published on our pages.

RIGHTS: We buy first North American serial rights, along with the right to run the entire article or parts of it on our web site for the duration of the issue life span (two months). All other rights revert to author after publication.

REQUIREMENTS: Typewritten, double-spaced, one side only, 1,000 to 12,000 words. Most of our articles are written by collectors and enthusiasts, not professional writers. We maintain the right to edit and rewrite substantially. Manuscripts and art accepted on PC-compatible disk or by e-mail with mailed paper copy. Most word-processing programs (or AC\SCII format) are acceptable; images must be read with Adobe Photoshop as a Tiff file with a minimum of 300 pixels per inch.

PHOTOS:  Clear black-and-white photos (or the originals) or Photoshop Tiff files are required for publication, but good photocopies only should be sent with the initial submission. We can use color prints only for certain pages and not in relationship to printed articles, unless otherwise arranged. If ferrotypes, Daguerrotypes, or Ambrotypes are in brass mats, please include the entire mat in your copy without any cropping on your part.

QUERIES ARE PREFERRED. All submissions must include return postage.
