Reader Profile

The average Military Images reader is male (over 80%), and mature. Almost half of all MI readers (49%) are between 46 and 55 years old, while another 35% are over 55 years old.

The average MI reader is well educated. Three quarters have a college degree, with many beyond that having done post graduate work. It’s no surprise that they are avid readers. The average MI reader buys 13 books a year, while 63% of all readers say that they actually collect books and related paper material. Most deal with their favorite subject, the Civil War. The Mexican War and the years between those two wars are their second favorite subjects.

Most MI readers are generally collectors. Surprisingly, the most collected items are weapons, such as long arms and swords, with 63% of readers reporting that they collect these items. More expectedly, 52% collect paper photographs such as carte de visites and cabinet photographs. Ambrotypes, tintypes, and Daguerrotypes - hard images - are collected by 37% of readers, while 13% of readers collect images of non-military subjects. Uniform items are collected by 48% of readers, with 28% also collecting insignia items. Prints of Civil War scenes are collected by 20% of readers.

As may be expected with so many collectors, auctions are a preferred way of obtaining items. In all, 59%, almost two thirds, buy items through auctions, with the average buyer at auctions reporting that they buy 21 items annually.

Study Methodology: The reader survey was conducted in early 2001 with a blind mailing to an “Nth” name list drawn from the subscriber list. There was a 46% response rate.
